The Sacred Parks Project

Fall is here (depending on where you are)...As the summer has drawn to a close, what has been revealed to you?

Recently, I've been trying to pay attention to the ordinary...The falling leaves and the smell of the autumn air, or the paths that aren't striking in their own right, but remind me of other paths I've taken many times before: familiar-looking trails through the woods, or non-descript hallways of the building where I work. Then, in a moment when I don't expect anything unusual or amazing, I walk around a corner that seems like a million others I've rounded...and then, I meet an experience I have never had before. Then I'm reminded that God meets me in the ordinary, in extraordinary ways. -Paul

My recent experience in Acadia National Park helped open my eyes to many things. First and foremost, it served as a reminder that God is everywhere - in the rustling leaves and the constant movement of the ocean.

But what stood out to me the most was the sense of community I received from my time in the park. In removing myself from the daily grind, where work and cell phones dominate my daily life, I was able to see myself and surroundings with much more clarity. I smiled and said hello to strangers…who in that environment were my neighbors. Together we were there enjoying nature and appreciating each other and the lives we’ve been given.

I’ve been missing Acadia ever since I left. It was such a pleasure to spend time in a place where you could never deny God is present. I feel like Acadia filled in a little piece of my heart that had been empty and I’ll carry my time there and that place with me wherever I go. And I will strive to live my life with the same sense of wonderment I experienced that weekend – viewing strangers as neighbors and all of nature and creation as a constant reminder that God is with me always.

"Look at the birds of the air;
they neither sow nor reap, nor gather,
into barns,
and yet your heavenly Father feeds them."
Matthew 6:28

Our daughter; Moe and I have made a makeshift bird feeder during these "Snow Days" and behold, birds by the flock have been frequenting it. We all take turns watching them from the warmth of our home. There are sparrows in various colors, Blue-Jays and the show stoppers are the Cardinals! I read this passage at our council meeting this past Monday evening and it struck me that just as our heavenly Father feeds the birds, we receive all that we need to accomplish our work. There are bills to pay, classwork to prepare for our Sunday school, music and worship planning. All of these are those things we are capable of accomplishing, just Moe and I were capable to make a bird feeder out of ordinary resources. God does the work going on behind the scenes, that is bringing, guiding the birds to this feeder, so too, He leads His holy people. Luther describes this work of God as the hidden and that which all of us at one time or another are witness to.

Where has God been visible or revealed to you most recently?
